The 'Final Five', Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian, entered the Rio team final on 9 August 2016 as strong favourites, with Raisman, 22, competing at her second Games and serving as team captain, old enough that teammates nicknamed her 'grandma'.
The team scored 184.897 to finish a full 8.209 points clear of silver medallists Russia, one of the largest winning margins in the event's modern history, with China taking bronze. It was the second consecutive Olympic team gold for the United States women, following the 'Fierce Five' in London four years earlier, cementing a period of American dominance in the sport.
The nickname 'Final Five' was chosen deliberately: it was the last Olympics contested under a five-gymnast team format before the rules changed to four per team from Tokyo 2020 onward, making the group's landslide win in Rio the last of its kind under the old system.
