India arrived at the 1983 World Cup as rank outsiders, having won only one match across the two previous tournaments, while West Indies were chasing a third consecutive title with a team many considered the best one-day side ever assembled. Batting first in the final at Lord's, India were bowled out for a modest 183.
Few gave India a realistic chance of defending such a small total against a West Indies batting line-up built around Viv Richards, but Richards was caught by captain Kapil Dev, running back and holding a skied hook shot, for 33, a wicket that shifted the momentum of the entire match. West Indies collapsed to 140 all out, with Madan Lal and Mohinder Amarnath taking three wickets apiece.
The 43-run win gave India their first World Cup and is widely credited as the single moment that transformed cricket's commercial and cultural centre of gravity toward India, inspiring a generation of players, including a young Sachin Tendulkar, and laying the groundwork for the country's eventual dominance of the sport's finances and television audience.
