The Philadelphia Warriors hosted the New York Knicks on 2 March 1962 at the Hershey Sports Arena, a neutral-site game scheduled away from Philadelphia as part of the era's practice of spreading NBA games around Pennsylvania. Wilt Chamberlain, already the league's dominant scorer, started fast and never slowed, reaching 41 points by halftime.
He kept scoring through the third and fourth quarters as Knicks players, aware of what was building, began fouling his teammates to keep the ball away from him, only for Philadelphia to feed it straight back. Chamberlain finished with 100 points on 36 of 63 shooting from the field and 28 of 32 from the free-throw line, an area normally a weakness of his game, in a 169-147 Warriors win.
No footage of the game exists, it was not televised, and only a partial radio broadcast, recorded off-air by a college student, survives today. More than six decades later, Kobe Bryant's 81-point game in 2006 is the closest anyone has come, underlining how far outside the norm Chamberlain's single night remains.
