Brian Lara had already held the record for the highest individual Test score once before, 375 not out against England in 1994, only to lose it to Australia's Matthew Hayden in 2003. Facing England again at the Antigua Recreation Ground in April 2004, Lara set about reclaiming it.
He batted for two minutes short of thirteen hours across the innings, facing 582 deliveries and hitting 43 fours and 4 sixes, grinding down an England attack over the course of several days before finally reaching 400, becoming the first batsman in Test history to pass that mark.
The innings reclaimed the world record Lara had lost, making him the only man to have held the Test record for the highest individual score twice, a distinction that still stands more than two decades later, and the 400 not out remains the highest score ever made in a Test match.
