Garry Sobers, already established as one of the finest all-round cricketers the game had produced, was captaining Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan at Swansea in August 1968 when he faced an over from left-arm spinner Malcolm Nash.
Sobers hit the first five balls of the over for six, clearing the boundary each time with a mixture of controlled power and clean timing, before the sixth ball was initially fielded on the boundary, only for the fielder to overbalance and carry the ball over the rope, completing an unprecedented six sixes in a single over in first-class cricket.
No one had achieved the feat before in first-class cricket, and it would be more than two decades before it was repeated at that level, and longer still before it happened in international cricket. The over remains one of the most famous passages of play in the sport's history and a permanent piece of cricket folklore, replayed and retold long after most of the era's Test matches have been forgotten.
